It should be noted that deciding to work towards certifying your dog in K9 search and rescue should not be taken lightly. Team training occurs once per week and most team members will train with their dogs throughout the week on their own time. Search and rescue training requires a lot of grit, patience and persistence and will also require you to invest your time and money.

The ultimate goal of each member of VISDDAC is to be able to deploy as a certified K9 and handler to a disaster somewhere in the world. You must decide for yourself if the stresses of working in a disaster zone are something you can cope with.

Is my dog a suitable K9 search and rescue candidate?

All dogs are different and not all dogs are suitable K9 search and rescue dogs. Our experienced members will meet with you and your dog to determine the suitability of you and your dog.

How long does it take to train a certified K9 search and rescue dog?

The general rule is that it takes about 3 years of weekly training in order to pass all the required tests. Please keep in mind that no 2 dogs are alike.
